Prosthetic crowns

When is it worth considering a prosthetic crown?

A porcelain crown is a permanent prosthetic restoration which is placed on a properly prepared patient's own tooth. Its function is to precisely restore the anatomical shape, colour and function of the tooth, while at the same time significantly strengthening its weakened structure. The use of a prosthetic crown restores the correct bite function, improves the aesthetics of the smile and protects the tooth from further damage.

A prosthetic crown is particularly advisable when:

  • there has been fracture or significant destruction of a tooth as a result of caries or mechanical trauma,

  • the tooth has undergone endodontic (root canal) treatment - In such cases, its structure is weakened and requires permanent reinforcement,

  • there is a need to improve the aesthetics of the smile by correcting the shape, size or colour of teeth, as well as closing unwanted interdental spaces.

Prosthetic crowns are a solution that combines high durability with a natural aesthetic effect, ensuring long-term comfort and safety.

The selection of the appropriate type of prosthetic crown depends on the individual needs of the patient, anatomical conditions in the mouth and aesthetic expectations. During consultations at our clinic in Warsaw's Wola, the prosthodontist proposes modern, durable and completely safe solutions.

All-ceramic crowns (E.max)

Premium all-ceramic crowns are recommended primarily for the restoration of front teeth - incisors and canines. They are made entirely of high-quality ceramic, which perfectly imitates natural tooth enamel.

  • Benefits: The most important advantage of E.max crowns is their exceptional translucency and ability to transmit light in a manner similar to natural tooth tissue. The precise matching of colour and shape ensures an extremely natural, harmonious aesthetic effect.

  • Indications: Particularly recommended to patients who want the highest aesthetics, a subtle treatment effect and a perfect smile without visible prosthetic interference.

Zirconia crowns

Zirconia crowns are made from zirconium oxide, a modern material with an
exceptional mechanical strength, often referred to as „ceramic steel”. The material is fully biocompatible and contains no metal components.

  • Benefits: Zirconia crowns do not cause allergic reactions or discolouration of the gingiva near the crown rim. They are characterised by a very high resistance to fracture and abrasion and can therefore be successfully used in both the anterior and lateral segments of the dental arch.

  • Indications: Recommended for patients seeking a solution with maximum durability, without compromising on aesthetics and biological compatibility with the body.

Porcelain-Fused-to-Metal (PFM) Crowns

Porcelain crowns on a metal substructure are a proven and classic prosthetic solution. Their construction is based on a core made of a safe metal alloy, which is then covered with a layer of aesthetic porcelain.

  • Benefits: They are characterised by a very high resistance to chewing forces and a good value for money, making them a functional solution in many clinical cases.

  • Indications: Most commonly used in the restoration of posterior teeth where strength and function are key and aesthetics are not a priority.

Treatment planning and visualisation for prosthodontics

In aesthetic prosthetics, precise planning and the ability to assess the end result in advance play a special role. To this end, we use two complementary stages: wax-up and mock-up.

Wax-up is the stage of modelling the planned tooth shape in wax on a plaster model of the patient's teeth. It allows the proportions, height and aesthetics of the future crowns to be planned accurately. At this stage, the prosthodontist can make adjustments even before treatment begins in the mouth.

Mock-up is a temporary visualisation of the future effect directly in the patient's mouth. This is usually made of composite or resin. It allows the appearance, function and comfort of future restorations to be assessed and any modifications made before the final crowns are made.

In summary: wax-up is the treatment plan on the model, while mock-up is its realistic visualisation in the patient's mouth.

How does a prosthetic crown differ from a bridge?

We use a dental crown to restore a single, heavily damaged tooth (e.g., after root canal treatment). As a result, it acts like a "helmet" that strengthens the tooth and restores its shape. In contrast, a dental bridge is used to replace one or more missing teeth. It works by resting on adjacent healthy teeth (abutments), which need to be ground down to support the entire structure.

Does getting a crown or bridge hurt?

No. All preparatory procedures, including tooth grinding among others, are performed under effective local anaesthesia. This makes the entire process fully comfortable and painless for the patient. After the procedure, once the anaesthetic wears off, only slight, temporary sensitivity may be experienced.

Zirconia crown or porcelain-fused-to-metal crown – which to choose?

Both crowns are durable, but they differ in aesthetics and biocompatibility. Crowns with a metal substructure are very strong, but the metal under the porcelain can cause the gum to discolour over time. Therefore, all-ceramic or zirconium crowns are the gold standard today. As they are made entirely from a tooth-mimicking material, they guarantee the highest aesthetics and are biocompatible, meaning they do not cause allergies.
