Dental Prosthetics

When should you see a prosthodontist?

Prosthetic treatment is more than just dentures. First and foremost, it helps in situations where a tooth is severely damaged or missing. It's worth visiting us if:

  • You have a broken or damaged tooth due to decay or trauma.

  • You have a root canal treated tooth: This tooth is weakened and requires strengthening with a dental crown.

  • One or more teeth are missing: Gaps after tooth extraction should be filled with a bridge or implant.

  • Improving the aesthetics of your smile: When you want to change the shape or shade of your teeth (e.g. with veneers).

Prosthetic solutions - How can we restore your smile?

Depending on your needs and oral conditions, our prosthodontist in Wola will suggest one of several modern solutions.

Crowns are "caps" placed on a damaged tooth to strengthen it and restore its shape. Prosthetic bridges, in turn, are used to replace one or more missing teeth, resting them on healthy adjacent teeth. In our clinic, we perform:

Veneers are thin porcelain shells applied to the front surface of the teeth. This solution is mainly used for radical aesthetic improvement – changing color, shape, or closing gaps between teeth. Thanks to them, we achieve the "Hollywood Smile" effect.

Implant-Supported Prosthetics

Unlike traditional methods, a dental implant not only fills the gap, but above all replaces a lost tooth root. This stops the bone loss process and the gum retains its natural shape.

On the implanted fixture, we can place a crown, a bridge, or even a full denture (e.g., an All-on-4 system). This is a solution that almost perfectly imitates natural dentition in terms of functionality and aesthetics.

Treatment planning and visualisation for prosthodontics

In aesthetic prosthetics, wax-up and mock-up are two stages of planning and visualising the final outcome:

  1. Wax-up is the modeling of a new tooth shape using wax on a plaster cast of your teeth.
    • It allows for precise planning of the shape, height, and proportions of future crowns, veneers, or bridges.
    • A prosthodontist can correct the appearance of teeth before anything is done in the mouth.
  2. A mock-up is a temporary visualisation on the patient's actual teeth, usually made from a light composite material or resin.
    • This shows what the teeth will look like after restoration.
    • The patient can assess the aesthetics, function, and comfort, and the dentist can make any necessary adjustments.

In brief: a wax-up is a plan on a model, and a mock-up is a visualisation in the patient's mouth.

How does a prosthetic crown differ from a bridge?

We use a dental crown to restore a single, heavily damaged tooth (e.g., after root canal treatment). As a result, it acts like a "helmet" that strengthens the tooth and restores its shape. In contrast, a dental bridge is used to replace one or more missing teeth. It works by resting on adjacent healthy teeth (abutments), which need to be ground down to support the entire structure.

Does getting a crown or bridge hurt?

No. All preparatory procedures, including tooth grinding among others, are performed under effective local anaesthesia. This makes the entire process fully comfortable and painless for the patient. After the procedure, once the anaesthetic wears off, only slight, temporary sensitivity may be experienced.

Zirconia crown or porcelain-fused-to-metal crown – which to choose?

Both crowns are durable, but they differ in aesthetics and biocompatibility. Crowns with a metal substructure are very strong, but the metal under the porcelain can cause the gum to discolour over time. Therefore, all-ceramic or zirconium crowns are the gold standard today. As they are made entirely from a tooth-mimicking material, they guarantee the highest aesthetics and are biocompatible, meaning they do not cause allergies.
